Li Na to miss US Open with knee injury

World number two Li Na of China will miss the entire North American hardcourt tournaments citing a longstanding knee injury as the reason for the pullout.

The Chinese tennis superstar will miss next week’s Roger’s Cup in Montreal as confirmed by the tournament organizers. Li Na won the 2012 edition of the tournament.

“I wanted to let all of my great fans know that unfortunately I am going to have to withdraw from the upcoming WTA events in Montreal and Cincinnati, as well as the US Open,” she said.

“Since March, I have been struggling with my knee and it is just not where I need it to be in order to play at the highest level.

“My medical team has advised me that I need to take some time off to rest my knee so it heals. I look forward to getting back on the court this fall in Wuhan and Beijing (in the autumn).”

Li Na follows Rafael Nadal as top names in tennis to withdraw from Roger’s Cup. Nadal has stated he will miss Toronto and Cincinnati tournaments but has yet to confirm whether he can make it in New York. Nadal is the defending champion in Canada, Cincinnati and the US Open in New York.
