Lucie Safarova advances to first Slam semifinal

Czech Republic’s Lucie Safarova achieved a career milestone on Wednesday by reaching her first Grand Slam singles semifinal. She made her way to the final four at the Wimbledon 2014 championships after outlasting 22nd seed Ekaterina Makarova of Russia 6-3, 6-1.

Both players have eliminated top ten players en route to the quarterfinals. Makarova stunned fourth seed and former finalist Agnieszka Radwanska in the fourth round while Safarova, seeded 23rd, eliminated 10th seed Dominika Cibulkova in the third round.

Safarova’s statistics were impressive, having converted four out of seven break points. She produced 24 winners versus Makarova’s seven.

Up next for Safarova is fellow Czech and sixth seed Petra Kvitova. Kvitova eliminated another Czech player in the quarterfinals, Barbora Zahlavova Strycova. Safarova trails 0-5 in their head to head series but she’s not thinking about that now.

“Semifinals of Wimbledon!!! No words…just tears of happiness!!!! #wimbledon #semifinals #dream #happy” – Safarova tweeted.
