Mouratoglou says Serena Williams going through tough period

Patrick Mouratoglou, the current coach of world number one Serena Williams, revealed that the American tennis superstar is going through a “difficult period,” according to a report from The Guardian. http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2014/jul/17/serena-williams-difficult-period-patrick-mouratoglou

There have been speculations on Williams’ mental and physical condition after she seemed disoriented during her doubles match at Wimbledon. She and sister Venus Williams retired from the match after Serena served four consecutive double faults in the third game. The official reason from the pullout was due to “viral illness” but several commentators doubt if that was really the reason. Williams was ousted in the singles competition in the third round by Alize Cornet. The American pulled out of this week’s Swedish Open in Bastad despite being the defending champion.

“Serena is clearly going through a difficult period. But since Wimbledon, we have had long hours of talks and we are getting back to work,” Mouratoglou was quoted by Tennis Magazine France.

“Today she is in the mood to get back to training so she can return even stronger. At no time was there any question of us stopping our collaboration.”

The popular coach wouldn’t comment on his personal relationship with Williams. The two were rumored to be lovers.

“I have never discussed private matters and I am not going to talk about them now. There have been difficult things. For sure, Serena is in a difficult phase but I will leave it there.”

Serena Williams is scheduled to compete in Stanford which starts in two weeks.
