Novak Djokovic, Nadal lead US Open 2014 men’s line-up

Last year’s US Open finalists Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will be returning at the Big Apple next month as the top two seeds for the US Open 2014 men’s championship. Novak Djokovic, a five time finalist at this event (won in 2011), will be brimming with confidence after winning the Wimbledon 2014 title earlier this month. World number two and defending champion Rafael Nadal will attempt to win this title for the third time.

The world’s top 104 ATP stars are slated to compete at this event. 2009 champion Juan Martin Del Potro is expected to make a comeback at this event after missing a significant chunk of the season due to undergoing wrist surgery. Five-time champion Roger Federer is back in the mix as world number three. Past champions Lleyton Hewitt (2001) and Andy Murray (2012) will also compete.

Federer is gunning for a record extending 18th Grand Slam title at this event after falling short of achieving this feat at Wimbledon where he finished runner-up to Djokovic. Nadal, who won his 14th Grand Slam singles title at French Open in May, could narrow down Federer’s lead over him should he successfully defend the title and will break the tie with Pete Sampras (14) in Grand Slam titles haul.

The July 14 ATP Rankings was the basis in determining the main draw entry list for the US Open 2014 Championships. The seedings will be determined prior to the start of the event.

The US Open 2014 takes place from August 25 until September 8 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
