Pablo Cuevas wins second title in July with Umag crown

Pablo Cuevas won his second title in three weeks this July at the Croatia Open Umag 2014 tournament on Sunday. Cuevas defeated defending champion TommY Robredo of Spain 6-3, 6-4. The Uruguayan had an impressive week, having beaten the tournament’s top two seeds and he came from the qualifying rounds!

“I’m really happy,” said Cuevas “I never expected to win two tournaments in a row. This week was more difficult because I had to play [qualifying] and I played against very good players. During the two years I was out, I thought I would never be able to play again and especially at that level.”

Cuevas won his maiden title at the Swedish Open two weeks ago. His victory in Umag will see his ranking rise to a career-high number 40 on Monday. This is a remarkable feat for the Uruguayan who was unraked at the start of 2013 due to inactivity the year before due to surgery.

Cuevas won €77,315 and 250 ranking points.

Robredo was aiming to win his 13th career title but now sports a 12-8 record in title matches following the loss.

“I had a great tournament but today Pablo was better than me,” Robredo said. “I would like to congratulate Pablo. He [played] a great match and he didn’t miss a lot of balls. It’s good to have him back to that level.”
