Petra Kvitova advances to Wimbledon semifinals

Former champion Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic is through to the semifinals of the Wimbledon 2014 tournament after cruising past countrywoman Barbora Zahlavova Strycova. Kvitova, who won this event back in 2011, prevailed 6-1, 7-5.

“I really didn’t want a third set because I knew we would probably have to close the roof, so there were many things on my mind at the time,” Kvitova said. “When I lost my serve for the first time in the set, I knew that I would really have to try to break back, and I’m glad that I was able to. The second set was up and down, but I survived it, which is important.

“It feels great to be in the Wimbledon semifinals. I have great memories from when I won here.”

Kvitova will face another Czech player in the semifinals, first-time Slam finalist Lucie Safarova. Safarova advanced after eliminating Ekaterina Makarova of Russia.
