Petra Kvitova beats Safarova to reach Wimbledon 2014 final

Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova returned to the Wimbledon final after defeating good friend and countrywoman Lucie Safarova 7-6, 6-1 on Thuesday. Kvitova won this event back in 2011 (defeated Maria Sharapova).

Kvitova has been struggling in the past three years after winning the title at the All England Club but still managed to be a strong fixture in the world’s top 10.

“It’s great, definitely. I don’t have the words to describe how I’m feeling right now,” Kvitova said. “It was a tough match mentally, because Lucie is a good friend of mine – we know each other very well on and off the court – and I knew she was going to play very well. I’m just very happy I won and am in the final again.

“I tried to be focused from the beginning of the second set. After I won the tie-break, I broke her in the first game of the second set and I managed to keep it going and serve well until the end.”

Kvitova will next face Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard after the latter ousted world number three Simona Halep of Romania in the other semifinal that took place later in the day.

“I’ve got two days to go until the final. I will just try my best out there,” Kvitova said. “I know the feeling when you hold the trophy and I really want to win my second title here and I will do everything that I can.”
