Petra Kvitova wins second Wimbledon title, beats Bouchard

Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic can now proclaim herself as a multiple Grand Slam titlist after winning her second Wimbledon title on Saturday. Kvitova defeated first-time finalist Eugenie Bouchard of Canada in a devastating fashion. The final scoreline 6-3, 6-0.

Kvitova has been in the quarterfinals or better at Wimbledon for the past five years. She would go on to win her maiden Slam title at the All England Club back in 2011 after defeating Maria Sharapova. Last week, it would seem like the streak is about to end after she was two points from defeat to five-time champion Venus Williams before turning things around just in time in a three-set thriller.

That match against Williams seemed to have given Kvitova renewed confidence on her game as she stormed her way in the latter rounds – including the title round against Bouchard.

Bouchard has been making waves this season after reaching the semifinals (or better) of the first three Grand Slam events (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon). She’s made upset wins in the tournament as well – defeating Angelique Kerber of Germany in the quarterfinals and world number three Simona Halep in the semifinals.

“First of all I’d like to congratulate Petra,” she said during the trophy ceremony. “She played fantastic these two weeks and it was really tough for me today, but I’m proud of how I’ve played this whole tournament.

“I love coming back to Wimbledon, so thank you guys.”

Kvitova said her piece afterwards.

“I had great tactics from my coach before the match – he always knows what I have to play,” she said. “But Eugenie had such a great tournament these two weeks, and I’m sure she’ll be here to stay.”

“I can’t say that it’s more special than when I won my first Wimbledon title, but after three years, to stand here with the trophy again is so amazing,” she said when asked about winning the title again.

“It’s my second title, so I hope now it’s going to be a little easier for me.”

Kvitova’s ranking will rise from number six to number four on Monday while Bouchad will make her debut in the world’s top ten with the number seven ranking.
