Rafael Nadal pulls out of Toronto, Cincinnati

In a surprising turn of events, world number two Rafael Nadal won’t be competing at the upcoming Rogers Cup in Toronto and Cincinnati Masters due to right wrist injury. Nadal is the defending champion on both Masters 1000 hardcourt events.

Nadal last competed at the Wimbledon championships where he lost in the fourth round to Australian teen Nick Kyrgios. He is slated to make a comeback at the US Open which starts on August 25.

“Unfortunately I injured myself yesterday during practice and after checking with my doctors I will have to stay out of competition for at least two to three weeks,” Nadal said in a statement.

Nadal went on an unbeaten streak during the North American hardcourt season – winning the Rogers Cup, Cincinnati Masters and the US Open. He won a record $3.6 million in prize money for winning the US Open Series and the US Open title.

He will lose 2,000 ranking points in the process but will still be locked in number two despite this development.
