Roger Federer excited to fight for 18th Slam title

World number four Roger Federer of Switzerland is eager to fight for a record-extending 18th Grand Slam title at the Wimbledon 2014 Championships on Sunday. Federer will face world number two and tournament top seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia for the title.

“I clearly am very excited for the final, because that’s how you want to feel before a final,” Federer said after a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Milos Raonic in the semifinals on Friday. “[I am] totally energised and eager to play.

“I must say this year has been very solid. Now this tournament as well has been very good. Also with Halle, just backing it up and getting the small rest you get in preparing for Wimbledon. I was able to get through that, as well.”

This is Federer’s ninth final at the All England Club and he’s aiming to win an unprecedented eighth title at Wimbledon.

“My matches have been pretty quick. Clearly a semi like this is a perfect result before a big match in the final. Especially now things get easier just because you know you have one match left. I have a lot of energy in the tank.”

The 32-year old gave credit where it is due.

“Stefan [Edberg] is clearly a piece of the puzzle, so is my fitness coach, Severin, and everybody around me,” he said. “They make it possible for me to wake up every morning motivated, healthy, fit, and eager to play. It’s clearly a team effort to a degree.”

The Swiss tennis superstar will rise to world number three in the ranking next week. He will also reclaim the Swiss number one ranking.

“You’ve got to love the game, because if you don’t love it, then it’s just going to be too hard,” he said. “I think that’s kept me going quite easily actually, because I know why I’m playing tennis. Deep down that’s really important.”
