The inaugural Wuhan Open, the Premier-level event that will take place the week of September 21, promises a stellar field of WTA superstars headed by the world’s top two players – Serena Williams and Li Na. This is going to be a special event for Li Na as she will be playing in her hometown.
“I’m so proud that my city is staging such a prestigious tournament,” Li said. “I’m very excited about being part of such a strong field of players and I can’t wait to play in front of my home crowd.”
The three Grand Slam singles champions this season will be present in this event – with Li Na (Australian Open), Maria Sharapova (French Open) and Petra Kvitova (Wimbledon).
The tournament organizers also revealed that Dongfeng Motor is the official title sponsor of the event and will now be known as Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open. There are 16 other supporting sponsors announced during their recent press conference.
