Serena Williams pulls out of Swedish Open – Bastad

World number one Serena Williams has withdrawn her participation in next week’s Swedish Open in Bastad, according to an ESPN report. The American is the defending champion at this claycourt event but couldn’t attend this year due to ongoing recovery from a virus.

It can be remembered that Williams pulled out of the Wimbledon 2014 doubles match last week with her older sister Venus after struggling during warm-up and the earlier part of the game. At one point she served four consecutive double faults before conceding the match.

“I decided not to play in Bastad, because I am still not feeling 100%,” Williams said in a statement.

“I want to be in perfect condition to go back on court, but unfortunately it’s not the case. I really hope to be able to get back to training from next week.”

“I want to thank all my fans and the event organisers, for their support and comprehension.”

“Bastad was my favourite tournament I played in last year, thus I am very disappointed not to come back there. But there is still next, year, so I can’t wait to go back there.”
