David Goffins wins first career ATP title in Kitzbühel

Belgian David Goffin continued his impressive win streak this week after winning his first career ATP title at the bet-at-home Cup in Kitzbühel, Austria on Saturday. Goffin defeated fellow first-time finalist Dominic Thiem of Austria 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. The Belgian, handed a wild card at this event, has extended his win streak to 20 after winning three consecutive ATP Challenger Tour titles prior to this tournament.

“It’s a great day for me, to win an ATP [World Tour] 250,” said Goffin. “It’s just an amazing feeling right now. I don’t believe it. Maybe in a few days I’ll realise what happened today.

“You work so much in the fitness room and on the court for a moment like today. You play so many practices and so many matches to have this emotion, so when you win the match point you can’t control it.”

Goffin is now the fifth ATP player to win his maiden title this year. He won €77,315 and 250 ranking points which are enough for him to break into the world’s top 50. This is a remarkable achievement considering that he was ranked outside the world’s top 100 a month ago.

Meanwhile, Thiem was still happy with how he performed this week and put on a lot of effort in front of the home crowd.

“You have to find the right words and I hope that I managed to do that,” said Thiem after the match. “It was an amazing week for me and the crowd gave me huge support during every match.

“Of course I’m very disappointed. But I lost against an extremely strong opponent, who didn’t commit a lot of mistakes and played with a lot power.”

In doubles, Finnish pair Henri Kontinen and Jarkko Nieminen won the title after defeating Daniele Bracciali and Andrey Golubev. The duo won€23,500 and 250 ranking points.
