Radwanska beats Makarova, advances to Montreal final

Agnieszka Radwanska will have a chance to play for her first title of the season with a straight sets victory over Ekaterina Makarova of Russia in the semifinals of the Rogers Cup on Saturday. Radwanska defeated Makarova 7-6, 7-6.

Makarova was playing her biggest career semifinal at a Premier 5 event. She produced one of the biggest upsets of the tournament earlier this week after eliminating 2014 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova along the way.

“I think it was a great match,” Radwanska said. “Two hours of fighting and long rallies and tight games – I had to really run a lot to win that match because she’s so good. I had to give 100% today.

“I think I was just better on a few points today. I’m really happy with the win.”

Radwanska is looking forward to her title match against Venus Williams. Williams upset younger sister Serena Williams in three sets in the other semifinal. Venus has a 5-3 series lead over Radwanska but their prior two meetings were won by the latter.

“I think Venus is really on fire right now,” Radwanska said. “I watched her today, and a couple of days ago as well, and I think she’s playing amazing this week. It’s not gonna be easy, for sure.

“But it’s the final, we’ll both be fighting, and we’ll see what happens!”
