Simona Halep to become world number two after Rogers Cup

Simona Halep’s stellar rise in the WTA rankings will take another step further on August 11, Monday after it was confirmed that she will achieve a career high number two ranking starting that week.

Current world number two Li Na has pulled out of next week’s Rogers Cup in Montreal which means the Chinese tennis superstar won’t be able to defend the semifinal points she garnered a year ago at this event. Though Halep won’t be taking part at this WTA Premier event as well, she did not enter at this tournament last year and won’t have any ranking points to defend.

Halep ended the 2013 season as world number 11 and she continued her momentum in 2014, achieving career milestones such as reaching the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, final at Roland Garros and semifinals at Wimbledon. SHe also won two more WTA titles in Doha and Bucharest.

She will become the 33rd player in WTA history to become world number two. The others are listed at the WTA website HERE.
