Sabine Lisicki wins Hong Kong Tennis Open 2014 title

Former Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki of Germany won her first title of the season at the 2014 Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open. This is her first title in over three years after she overpowered third-seed Karolina Pliskova of Czech Republic 7-5, 6-3 to hoist the trophy in the end.

“After being in three finals last year and losing them closely, this is a big step forward for me,” the top seed said. “I’ve won titles in doubles but obviously the main goal is to play well in singles and get these trophies. And I’m even happier because coming here was such a spontaneous decision – we literally decided three or four days before the tournament – and I felt very well all week in Hong Kong.”

This is Lisicki’s fourth WTA title – having won her first three in Charleston (2009) and Birmingham and Dallas in 2011.

Pliskova still has a lot to celebrate in Hong Kong after she and twin sister Kristyna won the doubles title with a 6-2, 2-6, 12-10 win over Arina Rodionova and Patricia Mayr-Achleitner.
