Incheon was awarded the right to host the event on April 17, 2007 and defeated Delhi, India to host the Asiad. Incheon became the third South Korean city to host the games after Seoul (1986) and Busan (2002).
There are thousands of competitors from 45 nations expected to participate in the Games and the slogan “Diversity Shines Here” was revealed on September 16, 2010. Three Spotted seal siblings were revealed to be the official mascots of the Games which took place in Songdo Island on November 4, 2010. The names of the seals are “Barame,” “Chumuro” and “Vichuon” which means wind, dance and light respectively in Korean language. The mascots were designed to become symbols of future peace between South Korea and North Korea. The cost of the Asian Games is estimated to be around $1.62 billion.
