Petra Kvitova qualifies for WTA Finals Singapore

A stellar title run at the Premier-level Wuhan Open on Saturday assured two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova a place at the elite WTA Finals Singapore tournament which takes place later this month at the Southeast Asian city.

Kvitova became the fourth player to qualify at this eight-woman singles and doubles team tournament. She joins Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Simona Halep.

Kvitova defeated Eugenie Bouchard to win the Wuhan Open and earned 900 ranking points in the process.

The Czech star won the Wimbledon tournament for the second time when she also defeated Bouchard in the final last July to strengthen her bid to qualify for this event. She’s a previous titlist at this year-end event in 2011, the same year when she won her first Wimbledon title.

“From the beginning my season was really tough. If somebody told me at the Australian Open that I would win Wimbledon and still be fighting for Singapore, I’m not sure I would have believed them.

“But I’ve had a great second part of the season. It all started a little bit at the French Open, and from there I just kept improving. I think early on I was expecting too much of myself, and it was really difficult to take the loss in my first round in Australia, but I kept working hard, and now I’m here.”
