Rafael Nadal to play at Shanghai Masters despite appendicitis

World number two Rafael Nadal has opted to take part at this week’s Shanghai Masters despite being diagnosed by appendicitis. He received treatment at the hospital wherein he was prescribed with antibiotics to deal with the inflammation.

Nadal said that he began feeling abdominal pains late Saturday and went to the hospital the next day for checkup. It was confirmed by the doctors that he had the early stages of the condition.

Nadal said that he opted to try treatment using antibiotics rather than undergoing surgery right away. He said that he felt good enough to begin practicing for the tournament.

“I am not going to go for surgery. That’s great news for me today. That’s why I’m here practicing for 45 minutes, and trying to play tomorrow,” the 14-time Grand Slam champion said.
