Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova respond to Tarpischev’s remarks

The world’s top two players, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova, have shared their thoughts on the one-year suspension imposed by the WTA Tour to Russian Tennis Federation President Shamil Tarpischev.

In an interview at a late night talk show, Tarpischev referred to Serena Williams and Venus Williams as “brothers”. The move led to a $25,000 fine and the one-year suspension.

“I think the WTA did a great job of taking (the) initiative and taking immediate action to his comments,” Williams said on Sunday at the WTA Finals Singapore. “I thought they were very insensitive and extremely sexist as well as racist at the same time. I thought they were in a way bullying.”

Tarpischev maintained that there’s no malicious intent in saying that and that he was part of “a humorous show.” He said that he couldn’t comment on the matter.

“I can’t comment. I don’t understand it,” he was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, Sharapova also agreed with the move.

“I think they were very disrespectful and uncalled for, and I’m glad that many people have stood up, including the WTA. It was very inappropriate, especially in his position and all the responsibilities that he has not just in sport, but being part of the Olympic committee,” she said.

Tarpischev has been the Kremlin Cup chairman for 18 years and a member of the International Olympic Committee.

Williams and Sharapova are currently in Singapore for the WTA Finals.
