The defending champion in the men’s singles event is nine-time winner Rafael Nadal of Spain. Nadal has only lost one match in this prestigious claycourt tournament (back in 2009). The defending champion in the women’s singles event is two-time winner Maria Sharapova of Russia. Sharapova has reached the final in the past three years (winning two). This claycourt tournament has a total financial commitment of €28,028,600, an increase of 12.03 % from last year. The defending champions in singles are Rafael Nadal (men) and Serena Williams (women). This year’s champion will receive €1,800,000 plus 2,000 ranking points. The runner-up gets €900,000 and 1,200(men)/1,400(women) ranking points.
