Tennis Guru Chronicles: Australian Open Series takes off with powerhouse winners

The first week of competitions in this new season of tennis passed by with several high-profile withdrawals, especially on the women’s side. Australian Open favorites Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Simona Halep pulled out of their respective tournaments due to lingering injuries and thought that it’s best to rest until the Grand Slam event which begins in a week’s time. Two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka stepped up to win in Brisbane where she defeated Angelique Kerber. In Shenzhen, Agnieszka Radwanska solidified her hold in the world’s number four ranking thus continuing her title-winning streak which spanned back in the Asian swing (including the WTA Finals in Singapore). In Auckland, Sloane Stephens secured her second career WTA ranking by winning the ASB Classic.

On the men’s side, world number one Novak Djokovic is the player to beat this season after a commanding victory over rival Rafael Nadal to win the Qatar Open title. In Brisbane, Milos Raonic exacted revenge on defending champion Roger Federer in a rematch of the final last year but with a different result this time. Raonic’s title victory in Brisbane is an indication of a fervent intent to be back in the world’s top five.
