Tennis Guru Chronicles: New Year, New Tennis Season!

Happy New Year and Happy New Tennis Season! Welcome to the first edition of the Tennis Guru Chronicles! I’ll be sharing the latest tidbits in the world of tennis. It’s been more than a month since the 2015 tennis season concluded and since then we’ve seen top ATP and WTA stars participating in exhibition events such as the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) which was staged in five cities (Kobe, Japan; Manila, Philippines; Mumbai, India; Dubai and Singapore), the Champions Tennis League (CTL) in six cities in India, the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi and the World Tennis Thailand Championship 2016 in Hua Hin.

Now that’s all behind us, let’s look forward to an exciting 2016 season ahead. There are three ATP and three WTA events happening in the week of January 3 to 10, 2016. Here’s an overview:

Brisbane International (WTA Premier / ATP 250 event): This dual-gender event is staged in the first week of the year and is one of the lucrative lead-up to the Australian Open which takes place later in the month. World number two Simona Halep of Romania elected not to defend the Shenzhen Open title which is taking place this week as well to take part in this tournament as the top seed followed by Garbine Muguruza of Spain and Maria Sharapova of Russia. In the men’s side, world number three and defending champion Roger Federer is the tournament’s top seed followed by Kei Nishikori and Marin Cilic.

Chennai Open (ATP): The Chennai Open is an ATP 250 hardcourt tournament that takes place from January 4 to 10, 2016. It is the only ATP-level tournament in India and marks the start of the season. Three-time champion Stan Wawrinka is back in the tournament as the top seed followed by Kevin Anderson of South Africa (making his debut) and Benoit Paire of France.

Qatar Open (ATP): The Qatar Open is an ATP 250 hardcourt tournament that takes place from January 4 to 9, 2016. It is one of the two ATP World Tour events that are being held in the Middle East. World number one Novak Djokovic returns to the event and will face tough competition including second seed and 2014 champion Rafael Nadal. Defending champion David Ferrer is back as fourth seed.

ASB Classic (WTA): This WTA International event takes place from January 4 to 9, 2016 and is one of the lucrative lead-up to the Australian Open which takes place later this month. Defending champion Venus Williams is back as the tournament’s top seed. Two years ago, the American finished runner-up to Ana Ivanovic who’s seeded second this year. Caroline Wozniacki is seeded third.

Shenzhen Open (WTA): This WTA International tournament takes place from January 3 to 9, 2016. Last season’s WTA Finals Singapore champion Agnieszka Radwanska begins her campaign this year in this Chinese city as the top seed followed by Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic and Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania. Last year’s champion Simona Halep elected to compete at the Brisbane International tournament which is also taking place this week.

Hopman Cup: A mixed-player competition sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). The competition is one of the most important lead-up to the Australian Open tournament later this month. The 2016 edition takes place from January 3 to 9, 2016.
