Djokovic dismantles Raonic for fifth Indian Wells trophy

Top-ranked Novak Djokovic was simply ruthless in the final match versus Milos Raonic at the Indian Wells on Sunday. The Serbian won his fifth BNP Paribas Open title with a 6-2, 6-0 dismantling of Canadian Milos Raonic. The victory also means that Djokovic is now tied with Rafael Nadal with the most number of ATP Masters 1000 titles at 27 – an all-time leader. The win also means that the “Big Four” of Djokovic, Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray have won 49 out of the past 53 ATP Masters 1000 tournaments.

Djokovic sealed the first set in 43 minutes and kept the momentum going in the second set. Raonic had treatment after the first set but from then on, there’s really nothing the Canadian can do to stop Djokovic and had his service broken three times.

The Serb seemed to be on a mission to improve in this tournament after a three-set scare in his opening round match against Bjorn Fratangelo of United States. Since then he would find his form and breezed through the succeeding matches without major obstacles.

This is Djokovic’s 62nd career title. He’s also successfully defended the 1000 ranking points and went home with the $ 1,028,300 paycheck that goes with the title victory. This is his third title of the year following wins in Doha (defeated Rafael Nadal) and Australian Open (defeated Andy Murray).

As for Raonic, the loss is not something to be ashamed about as he earned $ 501,815 and 600 ranking points which boosts his chances of returning to the world’s top 10 after being sidelines in most of last season due to injury. The Canadian won earlier this year in Brisbane (defeated Roger Federer) and reached the Australian Open semifinals (lost to Murray).
