The defending champion in the men’s singles event is Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland. Wawrinka prevented top-ranked Novak Djokovic to clinch a Career Grand Slam last year. The defending champion in the women’s singles event is Serena Williams of United States. Williams defeated Lucie Safarova of Czech Republic in last year’s edition of this claycourt Slam event.
The total prize money for the tournament was € 32,017,500 which is an increase of € 4 million compared from the 2015 edition. The winners of the men’s and women’s singles title will each receive € 2,000,000 an astounding increase of 11 % compared from last year.
