Belinda Bencic backs out of Rio Olympics

Swiss tennis star Belinda Bencic joined other big names in the sport in pulling out of the Olympics tournament in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in August.

The 19-year old, who reached a career high ranking of number 7 earlier this season, has been struggling with injuries as of late. She pulled out of her second round match at Wimbledon and missed this week’s Rogers Cup in Montreal where she’s a defending champion.

It is with a heavy heart that I have to withdraw from this year’s Olympics.
Although I have recovered from the wrist injury that I sustained at Wimbledon at the end of June, I am behind in my training schedule and am therefore not completely ready to take part in Rio.
I will be using the next few weeks to fully prepare with my coach Melanie Molitor for Cincinnati, New Haven and the US Open.
I will be giving my full support to the other Swiss tennis players as well as all of the Swiss athletes that are competing in Rio and I will be following them closely on TV.
