Defending champion Andy Murray pulls out of Rogers Cup in Toronto

The organizers of the ATP Masters 1000 Rogers Cup in Toronto announced that defending champion and world number two Andy Murray won’t be participating this year. This will be the first time the Scot won’t be playing at this event since his first appearance in 2006.

“I always look forward to coming to Canada and it’s the first time I’ve missed the tournament, the guys there do a great job and always look after the players,” Murray said on a statement posted at the Rogers Cup website. “My body needs some recovery time after reaching the latter stages of tournaments over the past few months. I’m sorry to my fans in Toronto but I look forward to being back in Canada next year,” the three-time Rogers Cup champion added.

“Andy has been very loyal to our event over the years, but certainly we are disappointed he has chosen not to be in Toronto this year,” Rogers Cup Tournament Director Karl Hale said.

“As a Masters 1000 event, we are one of the most important tournaments on the calendar. Andy is one of the very top players in the world and a fan favourite. He will be missed but we wish him continued success through the balance of the season.”

The 2016 edition of the Rogers Cup takes place from July 23 to 31, 2016 and is one of the best warm-up events leading to the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio next month.
