Stan Wawrinka pulls out of Rio Olympics; half of men’s top ten not participating

Two-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka pulled out of the Rio Olympics on Tuesday due to injury. This development means that half of the ATP World Tour’s top ten won’t be competing in the Brazilian city.

Wawrinka’s announcement comes days after his compatriot Roger Federer confirmed that he’ll be ending his 2016 season to fully recuperate from the knee surgery he had earlier this season. Another high profile Swiss player – Belinda Bencic also withdrew her participation at the Olympics.

The world number 4’s management team stated that he “felt increasing pain” during last week’s Rogers Cup in Toronto and was advised by his doctor to “reduce his physical activity for an undetermined period.” Wawrinka lost in the semifinals at the ATP Masters 1000 event.
