Andy Murray wins Third Scottish Sportsperson of the Year accolade

A remarkable season highlighted by winning his second Wimbledon title and second singles gold medal at the Olympics made Andy Murray the outright winner of the Scottish Sportsperson of the Year accolade. The announcement was made during the Team Scotland Scottish Sports Awards in Edinburgh yesterday where the world number two was named the 2016 Scottish Sportsperson of the Year. Murray brought home the Emirates Lonsdale Trophy for the third time.

He was awarded the trophy for the first time in 2012 with Sir Chris Hoy and the year after after winning his first Wimbledon title.

“It has been a fantastic season for me winning Wimbledon and retaining my Olympic title and I am delighted to be awarded the 2016 Scottish Sportsperson of the Year Award for the third time, particularly given all the incredible performances by other Scots this year,” – Murray said.

More than 50 Olympians and Paralympians from the recently concluded Rio Games were present at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre.

For the Team of the Year – the Britain’s Davis Cup Team secured the honors while wheelchair tennis legend Gordon Reid won the Para-sport Athlete of the Year.
