Malaysian Open Kuala Lumpur cancelled, to relocate in Chengdu China

The Malaysian Open, Kuala Lumpur, which was scheduled to run from September 26 to October 2, 2016, has been cancelled and the tournament rights have been awarded to Chengdu in China.

In a statement posted in their official Facebook page, the Malaysian Open organizers stated that the sole ATP 250 tournament in Southeast Asia “will not take place going forward” this year. The reason behind the cancellation has not been specified.

When one commented said that the decision may have been made due to the lingering haze problems in Singapore and Malaysia, the tournament organizers clarified that it’s not the case:

The Malaysian Open became the only sole ATP event in Southeast Asia after the rights of the Thailand Open were relocated to Shenzhen, China in 2014. Past winners include David Ferrer (2015), Kei Nishikori (2014), Joao Sousa (2013), Juan Monaco (2012), Janko Tipsarevic (2011), Mikhail Youzhny (2010) and Nikolay Davydenko (2009).
