US Open 2016 Women’s Semifinals Preview

The US Open 2016 Women’s Semifinals will certainly keep fans at the edge of their seats since the world number one ranking is on the line, a comebacking two-time former finalist might make it to the same stage for the third time and a first time Slam semifinalist is on the verge of a breakthrough.

US Open 2016 Women’s Semifinals 1: [1] Serena Williams (USA) vs [10] Karolina Pliskova (CZE)

Serena Williams, a six-time champion in New York, is the favorite to win this semifinal match despite the fact that she came in this tournament with less matchplay – she pulled out of the Rogers Cup and Cincinnati Open. Her opponent on the other hand, Karolina Pliskova of Czech Republic, is on a roll. Pliskova won her first Premier 5 tournament at the Cincinnati Open two weeks ago and her decision to skip the tournament in New Haven seemed to have paid off as she’s managed to maintain her winning streak. It’s her first career Grand Slam semifinal to date.

Williams and Pliskova played once against each other before – at the Stanford tournament two years ago with Williams prevailing in straight sets.

Who will win? Pundits pick Serena Williams to win in straight sets.

US Open 2016 Women’s Semifinals 2: [2] Angelique Kerber (GER) vs Caroline Wozniacki (DEN)

World number two Angelique Kerber had the chance to clinch the world number one ranking two weeks ago at the Cincinnati Open but fell a match short after she was beaten by Karolina Pliskova in the final. The German will have another shot in breaking Serena Williams’ hold at the top of the rankings. Williams will need to reach the final or win the title to retain the top ranking. Kerber on the other hand, will clinch the number one ranking should Williams fail to reach the final. If both Williams and Kerber reach the final then the US Open winner will also become the world number one.

It won’t be an easy semifinal match for Kerber as she’s facing two-time former finalist and former world number one Caroline Wozniacki. Wozniacki came to this tournament ranked 74th in the world but she’s proven that she’s not to be overlooked with marquee wins over number 8 Madison Keys and former champion and 9th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Kerber has a 7-5 head to head lead over Wozniacki but the latter has won five of their 9 hardcourt meetings.

Who will win? Pundits pick the reigning Australian Open champion to win straight sets.
