World number three Stan Wawrinka has revealed that had a “stress attack” prior to his US Open final win over top-ranked and defending champion Novak Djokovic.

The three-time Grand Slam champion has admitted in previous interviews that he even broke down in tears just minutes before walking onto the Arthur Ashe Stadium to face his good friend who happens to be a 12-time Grand Slam champion and has held on the number one ranking for more than 200 weeks.

In a column for Le Matin Dimanche, a Swiss newspaper, Wawrinka said that he tried to “hurt himself” on the court to distract his mind away from the overwhelming pressure.

“A lot of people are asking me how I was able to take the court, nonchalantly, when five minutes prior to that I had a stress attack and I was trying to hold back tears,” Wawrinka wrote.
