Andy Murray just a win away from world number one ranking

Andy Murray is now just a win away from becoming the new number one in the world rankings. This opportunity became possible after the surprise loss of incumbent Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters, an ATP Masters 1000 tournament, to Marin Cilic.

Seeded second in this event, Murray overcame a close challenge from Tomas Berdych 7-6, (11-9), 7-5 to set up a semifinal clash with Milos Raonic of Canada on Saturday.

A victory means that Murray will become world number one once the rankings are updated on Monday.

“Before the match there were a few more nerves maybe than there was earlier in the week,” said Murray. “But once I got out there, I didn’t feel any different to any other match.

“If it happens this week, great. But if not, I’m not putting any extra pressure on myself this week because I still think I have an opportunity to do it in the future.

“But obviously I’d love to do it tomorrow if I can.”
