Rafael Nadal played his first ATP match 15 years ago in Mallorca

This day (April 29) marks the 15th year since Rafael Nadal played his first career ATP World Tour match.

Nadal, who was 15 when he competed at the Mallorca Open in 2002, faced Ramon Delgado in the first round. He’ll go on to win the match against the Paraguayan 6-4, 6-4 to become the ninth player under the age of 16 to win an ATP World Tour-level match.

“I really wanted to go out there and play well. I knew it was going to be difficult, but I held my game. I thought I played well, keeping the ball deep and maintaining power.” Nadal said following that win.

Then the rest is history, as they say.

The 14-time Grand Slam champion has been on a winning streak in the past few weeks, clinching his 10th Monte Carlo Masters title and will be playing for a 10th Barcelona Open title on Sunday against Dominic Thiem of Austria.
