Nadal declines €500,000 appearance fee to compete in Hamburg – report

World number two Rafael Nadal has reportedly declined a hefty €500,000 appearance fee to compete at this week’s Hamburg Open. The Spaniard, who was seen recently spending quality time with his girlfriend, family and friends, was thought to have been offered a wildcard at this ATP 500 claycourt event.

Last year, the tournament had then 22nd-ranked Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany at the top seed. THe title will ultimately go to seventh seed Martin Klizan after the Slovakian defeated Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay in a straight set final.

Pablo Carreno Busta and Richard Gasquet have already pulled out of the tournament which leaves 24th-ranked Albert Ramos-Vinolas as the tournament’s top seed this week.
