ATP World Tour Finals 2009: Nikolay Davydenko beats del Potro to clinch title »

Nikolay Davydenko became the first Russian to win the year-end ATP World Tour Finals title after beating Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro 6-3, 6-4 at London’s O2 arena.

Davydenko finished runner up in this event last year when it was still held in Shanghai, China. This time he moved one step higher to hoist the championship trophy and pocket $1,510,000 in prize money. He’ll also end the year at number 6, overtaking Andy Roddick who had to skip this tournament due to injury.

“I was [looking at the trophy], until 2008, [there are] so many names there, like Djokovic, Federer, everyone, [Pete] Sampras. In 2009, [it says] Davydenko forever on this trophy. I think it’s amazing. [In the] history of the [Finals], for my name to be there is something amazing for me,” Davydenko said after the match.

US Open 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro fought back from a break down in the third set to defeat Swedish player Robin Soderling 6-7(1), 6-3, 7-6(3) and reach the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals championship round for the first time.

The 21-year old Argentine had a dismal performance during his debut in the competition last year in Shanghai but this time he’s set to become the second player from his nation to win this year-end ATP tournament. The first Argentine player to lift the trophy was David Nalbandian in 2005.

ATP World Tour Finals 2009: Nikolay Davydenko outlasts Roger Federer »

Russian Nikolay Davydenko outlasted top-ranked Roger Federer in a three set thriller at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on Saturday to reach the season-ending tournament final for the second straight year. It also marked the end of Davydenko’s 12-match losing streak against the Swiss star.

It seemed like Federer was headed for victory in the third set when he was just two points from the win when he led at 5-5 and 0-30 on Davydenko’s serve. However, the world number seven held on to his nerves to eventually break the Swiss star’s defense and record a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 victory.
