The $1 million Abierto Mexicano Telcel, one of the elite 11 ATP 500 tournaments this season, takes place this week at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess in Mexico.

Spaniard Nicolas Almagro is a two-time defending champion of the tournament and will aim for a record-setting hat-trick but will have to face tough competition from higher seeded players. Five players from Spain are in the top eight seedings:

The ladies event of the 2010 Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships concluded last week with Venus Williams successfully defending the title with a resounding victory over Victoria Azarenka. This week, the men’s event takes place with defending champion Novak Djokovic leading the pack. Four time champion Roger Federer pulled out of the tournament due to a lung infection.

The $475,000 event is headed by Spain’s David Ferrer. Argentina is well represented in this tournament with David Nalbandian, Gaston Gaudio, Juan Ignacio Chela, Horacio Zeballos, Juan Monaco and Eduardo Schwank.

The ATP 500, $1.226 million Regions Morgan Keegan Championships begins this week with American Andy Roddick aiming to defend the title he has won twice (2009 and 2002). The other multiple winner is Tommy Haas (2007, 2006 and 1999). Making debuts in this event are Fernando Verdasco of Spain and Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic.

Australian Open 2010 semifinalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is back in the city of Marseille in France to defend the Open 13 title. This ATP 250 tournament has been in the circuit for 17 years and has produced four French champions. The total cash prize money is € 512,750.

Dutch tennis fans have a lot to be excited about this week as top ATP stars visit Rotterdam for this week’s ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, an ATP 500 event that has a total cash prize money of € 1,445,000. Serbia’s Novak Djokovic returns after a two-year absence in this tournament.

Juan Carlos Ferrero is the top seed of this week’s Brasil Open. The ATP 250 event has a total cash prize of $500,000 and is being held at Costa do Sauipe, Brazil. Ferrero hopes to make a rebound this week after losing the first round matches in his past tournaments (in Auckland and at the Australian Open). He’s a finalist in this event three years ago.

The SAP Open, an ATP World Tour 250 tournament with a total cash prize money of $600,000, begins this week at San Jose with three-time winner Andy Roddick leading the pack of ATP stars from all over. The second seed is Spain’s Fernando Verdasco who’s making his debut in the event while defending champion Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic gets the third seeding.

Here are the other seeded players: Tommy Haas [4], Tomas Berdych [5], Philipp Kohlsreiber [6], Sam Querrey [7] and Jeremy Chardy [8].

This year’s Australian Open singles champions, Roger Federer (men) and Serena Williams (women), held on to their number one rankings as the updated ATP and WTA rankings were released on February 1, 2010, Monday.

Federer defeated Andy Murray of Great Britain in three sets in the men’s final on Sunday. The Swiss star begins his 268th week as the world number one and is in third place for total number of weeks as the world’s top-ranked player. The overall leader is Pete Sampras at 286 weeks followed by Ivan Lendl with 270.

For failing to defend the title this year, Spain’s Rafael Nadal drops two places to number four. Taking his place as the world’s second-best player is Novak Djokovic of Serbia followed by Murray at number three.

“It is not important for me, the ranking issue and losing a few spots— that’s normal when you are not able to compete,” Nadal said. The Spaniard was reportedly relieved after medical experts cleared him of the knee tendinitis which led him to skip Wimbledon last year. He will be out of competition for the next four weeks.
