Wimbledon 2009: Rafael Nadal unsure on defending title »

Concerns are mounting whether world number one Rafael Nadal would be fit enough to defend the Wimbledon title following his announcement to pull out of this week’s Queen’s Club tournament (where he’s also the defending champion) due to knee injury.

Despite this, Nadal issued a statement saying that he’s hoping to play in time for Wimbledon, which starts on June 22.

I have been having some problems in the past months with my knees, that’s no secret, that did not allow me to compete always at 100 percent. I need to work with my team to recover well, work on my physical condition to be at my top form and get ready for the grass to play at Wimbledon. I hope I can be ready to compete by then,” he said.

Roland Garros | French Open 2009: Roger Federer clinches 14th Slam title »

The fourth time’s a charm for Roger Federer at the Parisian claycourts where he clinched his record-tying 14th Grand Slam title after beating Sweden’s Robin Soderling at the Roland Garros 2009 final. The score: 6-1, 7-6, 6-4.

Federer had been the tournament runner-up for the past three years, all those times losing to world number one Rafael Nadal.

This is the most satisfying win of my life, along with my first Wimbledon,” the Swiss star said.

I have tried for so many years, so there was much pressure involved. I always believed in it but it becomes harder with time,” he added.

The French Open 2009 win means that Federer is now tied with Pete Sampras in terms of Grand Slam singles haul. Aside from that, the Swiss world number two also completed a rare career Grand Slam win (where a player wins at least one trophy from each of the major tournaments – Australian, French, US Opens and Wimbledon). The victory virtually assured Federer’s inclusion in the year-end ATP World Tour Finals in London.

Roland Garros | French Open 2009: Svetlana Kuznetsova wins second career Slam »

Russian world number seven Svetlana Kuznetsova won her second career Grand Slam title in Paris on Saturday, beating top-seed compatriot Dinara Safina in two sets 6-4, 6-2. It also ended Safina’s fantastic 16-match winning streak on clay which saw her claim titles at Rome, Madrid and a finals finish at the Roland Garros.

Roland Garros | French Open 2009 Final: Roger Federer vs Robin Soderling live tennis match (free video stream) »

The men’s singles final in this year’s Roland Garros is going to be very interesting to watch considering that world number two Roger Federer had been on this stage for the past three years but finished runner-up in those occasions. He lost those matches to four-time defending champion Rafael Nadal.

However, this year has an interesting twist – Nadal won’t be his opponent this Sunday. Rather, it would be Swedish 23rd seed Robin Soderling, the man who defeated Nadal in the fourth round.

Both players dispatched their semifinal opponents in five set marathons. Soderling came from behind to oust 12th seed Chilean Fernando Gonzalez 6-3, 7-5, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4 while Federer picked up momentum starting from the fourth set to end Argentine fifth seed Juan Martin del Potro’s spectacular run in Paris 3-6, 7-6, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Could this be Federer’s chance to win the elusive claycourt title and finally complete a Career Slam? Or will Soderling make another giant killing and win his first career Slam? Your guess is as good as mine.

Roland Garros | French Open 2009 Final: Dinara Safina vs Svetlana Kuznetsova live tennis match (free video stream) »

It’s now down to two for this year’s Roland Garros 2009 Women’s singles event and it is going to be an all-Russian affair.

World number one Dinara Safina uncharacteristically made several errors but still managed to defeat Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova in two sets 6-3, 6-3 to reach the French Open final for the second straight year. In the other semifinal, Svetlana Kuznetsova had to go the distance to beat Australia’s Samantha Stosur 6-4, 6-7, 6-3. Both Cibulkova and Stosur are first time Slam semifinalists while the winners have impressive records but still short of the title win.

Safina, last year’s finalist, currently holds the lead in the head-to-head matches (8-5) against Kuznetsova, the 2006 finalist. Both players have met twice so far this year, with Kuznetsova beating Safina in Stuttgart final and the latter avenging the defeat by ousting the world number 7 a week later in Rome.

Who do you think will win? A title win for Safina would mean a validation of her top ranking and that she’s no longer the “Slamless number one player.” Meanwhile, a victory for Kuznetsova would mean a second Slam trophy. She won the US Open in 2004.

Roland Garros | French Open 2009: Roger Federer vs Juan Martin Del Potro live semifinal tennis match (free video stream) »

This may be the best chance for former world number one Roger Federer to clinch his first-ever Roland Garros title after four-time defending champion Rafael Nadal was ousted in the fourth round. The Swiss world number two had been in the finals for the past three years, all resulting to losses against Nadal.

Before he gets into the final for the fourth straight year, he needs to deal with Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro first. Record-wise, Federer has the edge; winning all their five encounters including a semifinal victory at the Madrid Masters three weeks ago. However, Del Potro is still a dangerous opponent considering his impressive performance so far this season. Let’s wait and see this Friday, June 5.

Roland Garros | French Open 2009: Robin Soderling vs Fernando Gonzalez live semifinal tennis match (free video stream) »

Swedish player Robin Soderling continued his dramatic run at this year’s Roland Garros by beating two-time semifinalist Nikolay Davydenko in the quarterfinals. The victory proved that his upset win over 4-time defending champion Rafael Nadal in the fourth round was no fluke.

Another challenge looms ahead for the Swede as he faces Chilean player Fernando Gonzalez in the semifinals this Friday, June 5. Gonzalez, an Australian Open finalist, currently leads their head-to-head matches, winning the last four encounters (4-3). Will Soderling be able to step up to the challenge and make it through to his first career Grand Slam final?
