Rafael Nadal defeats Robin Soderling in Abu Dhabi final »

World number two Rafael Nadal ended the two-match losing streak to Swede Robin Soderling on Saturday in the final of the Capitala World Tennis Championship, an exhibition tourament held at Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The Spaniard dispatched the world number eight with the score of 76 75.

Soderling made headlines last year when he ended Nadal’s 31-game winning streak at the French Open last year. The Swede went on to reach the final before losing to Roger Federer. In the season-ending ATP Tour World Finals in London, Soderling once again outplayed Nadal during the round robin stage.

Roger Federer settled for third place after defeating David Ferrer of Spain 61 75.

Nadal said that his main focus for this season is to win as many tournaments as he can. Reclaiming the number one ranking from Federer won’t be his main goal for the season.

The season-opening Capitala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates will conclude this weekend with a title match between Rafael Nadal of Spain and Robin Soderling of Sweden.

Nadal dispatched compatriot David Ferrer 76 63 while Soderling finally won a match against top-ranked Roger Federer after thirteen attempts.

The final match between Soderling and Nadal will be interesting considering that it was the former who stopped Nadal’s four year reign at the Roland Garros. Soderling went on to reach the French Open final last year, eventually losing to Federer.

The ATP 250 Chennai Open marks its fifteenth year on a positive note, having had its contract with major sponsor Aircel for the next two years. The Chennai Open is the only ATP-level tournament in India and has produced high profile winners such as Carlos Moya and Pat Rafter.

The $398,250 event will be headed by world number eight Robin Soderling followed by defending champion Marin Cilic of Croatia. Last year, Cilic overcame a tough challenge from Indian wildcard entrant Somdev Devvarman, then world number 202.

US Open 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro fought back from a break down in the third set to defeat Swedish player Robin Soderling 6-7(1), 6-3, 7-6(3) and reach the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals championship round for the first time.

The 21-year old Argentine had a dismal performance during his debut in the competition last year in Shanghai but this time he’s set to become the second player from his nation to win this year-end ATP tournament. The first Argentine player to lift the trophy was David Nalbandian in 2005.

One of the fourth round matches at this year’s Wimbledon will be a rematch of the recently concluded French Open 2009 final.

Second seed Roger Federer and thirteenth seed Robin Soderling dispatched their respective third round opponents to make the the faceoff possible.

Federer beat German Philipp Kohlschreiber in four sets during the opening match at the Centre Court while Soderling dispatched Nicolas Almagro of Spain in straight sets.

The weather seemed to provide the perfect opportunity for the multimillion dollar Centre Court roof to make its debut. However, a few minutes before the Federer-Kohlschreiber match – the sun appeared.

Q. Can I ask how you are first of all? You had the trainer and then you had the doctor and you seemed to be taking pills or something.

ROBIN SODERLING: Yeah, I feel okay. I feel much better than yesterday.

Q. What was wrong?

ROBIN SODERLING: My stomach has been pretty bad since Wednesday, so I didn’t eat a lot. Yeah, I felt pretty bad.
