The Williams sisters will meet each other for the 23rd time, this time for the Sony Ericsson Championships 2009 title.
Defending champion Venus Williams outlasted former top-ranked player Jelena Jankovic 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 to secure the final birth. Her younger sister, Serena Williams progressed to the finals after her opponent Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark retired due to abdominal injury while trailing 6-4, 0-1.
Serena Williams is already assured of the year-end number one ranking regardless of the outcome of the match. She was eliminated in the round robin stage for the past two years but this time she was at her element, remaining undefeated in her past four matches.

It’s the time of the year when the world’s top eight singles players and top four doubles teams compete for the season-ending WTA Sony Ericsson Championships 2009. For the second year in a row, the city of Doha in Qatar will host the event.
The eight players competing for the singles event are Dinara Safina (RUS), Serena Williams (USA), defending champion Venus Williams (USA), Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS), Elena Dementieva (RUS), Caroline Wozniacki (DEN), Victoria Azarenka (BEL) and Jelena Jankovic (SRB). The two alternates are last year’s runner- up Vera Zvonareva (RUS) and Agnieszka Radwanska (POL).

The sixth and seventh slots for the Sony Ericsson Championships, which will take place in Qatar later this month, have been secured by world number three Venus Williams and world number eight Victoria Azarenka after their spectacular performances and results for this season.
The two players will join Serena Williams, Dinara Safina, Elena Dementieva, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Caroline Wozniacki who already qualified for the elite eight singles field for this prestigious season-ending tournament.

Two-time Grand Slam winner Svetlana Kuznetsova officially became the fifth player to qualify for the Sony Ericsson Championships, the season-ending singles and doubles tournament that will take place in Qatar later this month.
The Russian will join compatriots Dinara Dafina and Elena Dementieva as well as Danish player Caroline Wozniacki and 11-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams. Three more slots are available for the taking.
