Unseeded Stepanek wins 2011 Legg Mason Tennis Classic title

Unseeded Czech player Radek Stepanek produced some of his best tennis moves on Sunday to upset top-seeded Gael Monfils of France and win the 2011 Legg Mason Tennis Classic. Stepanek became the oldest titlist of this tournament since Jimmy Connors in 1988 (at 35).

“We are like a wine: The older we are getting, the better we are. Age doesn’t matter,” Stepanek said.

“It’s a great feeling to be able to compete with the young guys and still beat them,” he added.
This is Stepanek’s first title for the past two and a half years. His ranking will certainly improve once the updated data is released on Monday. He entered the tournament ranked 54th in the world. He received $264,000 for his efforts.
