The Internazionali BNL d’Italia, more popularly known as Rome Masters, will take place from May 13 to 20, 2012. This combined men’s and women’s claycourt event features the world’s best ATP and WTA players. This is a significant stop on tour prior to the second Grand Slam event of the year – the French Open 2012 tournament in Paris.
The defending champions are Novak Djokovic of Serbia for the men’s event, ending Rafael Nadal’s 37-match unbeaten streak at this event. A week prior to this event, Djokovic also ended Nadal’s reign in Madrid thus making him a favorite to win the Grand Slam event in Paris at that time. In the women’s event, Maria Sharapova won her biggest claycourt title to date after beating Australia’s Samantha Stosur.
The Rome Masters 2012 event has a € 2,950,475 financial commitment for the men’s event and $2,168,400 for the women’s event.
