2012 Rogers Cup to feature 24 out of 25 top WTA stars

The top WTA stars are expected to take part at the Premier-level Roger Cup 2012 which will take place from August 4 to 13 at the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal. According to the tournament organizers, 24 out of the 25 top players in the world have signed up to become part of the event, which is part of the US Open 2012 series. Only defending champion Serena Williams won’t be taking part in this tournament, although this might still change.

“We are very pleased to announce that 24 of the Top 25 players in the world will be in Montreal this year,” said Rogers Cup Montreal tournament director Eugène Lapierre.

“Our list shows that the Rogers Cup continues to be one of the most important and appreciated tournaments on the tennis calendar, one that the ladies don’t want to miss.”

Last year, Serena Williams won her second consecutive hardcourt title of the 2011 season by beating Samantha Stosur of Australia in the final. Williams went on to win the US Open Series title but lost the US Open final to Stosur. Williams has just successfully defended the Bank of the West Classic title in Stanford on Sunday.
