Federer didn’t let Olympic loss dampen his spirits

Roger Federer of Switzerland will now become the top-seeded player at the upcoming US Open Tennis Championships 2012 which begins on August 27. The win at the Western & Southern Open – Cincinnati Masters on Sunday boosted his ranking points to assure himself that he will still be world number one this week and in the many weeks to come and to also become the top seed at Flushing, New York.

Federer said that his loss at the London 2012 Olympics gold medal match against Andy Murray of Britain did not dampen his spirits and he came to Cincinnati Masters with renewed focus.

“I came here and never dropped my serve. That’s the kind of reaction I wanted to see from myself. I didn’t have a letdown,” said Federer.

“Even though I reached almost all goals already this year by securing a medal, winning Wimbledon, and getting back it World No. 1, it’s important for me to push forward and give myself the best possible preparation for New York,” he added.

Federer is gunning for his 18th Grand Slam singles title in New York. He’s reached the semifinals in the past two years in New York, both times already in the brink of victory but losing those match points and the match itself to Serbian world number two Novak Djokovic.

Federer’s last US Open victory was in 2008. Since then, he’s reached the final in 2009 (lost to Juan Martin del Potro) and the semifinals in 2010 (lost to Djokovic) and 2011 (lost to Djokovic).

“It’s is completely different atmosphere in New York. The pressure is going to be different. There will be a lot talk from here until the first ball is struck over there,” Federer said.

“I know I have a great record against guys outside of the Top 30. I would think that’s who I’ll face in the first round. But it nevertheless could be a tough matchup. I have to look at that match and really not a whole lot further,” he added.
