Shanghai Masters: “Lack of Best Efforts” cost Nick Kyrgios a $16,500 fine from ATP

His controversial behavior at this week’s Shanghai Masters cost Nick Kyrgios a $16,500 fine sanctioned by the ATP.

The Australian has been ordered to pay $16,500 in fines due to his “lack of effort” and argumentative behavior during his second round match versus German qualifier Mischa Zverev. Kyrgios lost 6-3, 6-1 but it was his manner of losing that caught the headlines.

He failed to put any efforts on his serves and returns. He also walked toward his chair after a weak serve and did not even wait for Zverev’s return on that.

The breakdown of the $16,500 fine is as follows:

* $10,000 – “lack of best efforts”
* $5,000 – verbal abuse of a spectator
* $1,500 – unsportsmanlike conduct

The prize money for a second round finish at Shanghai Masters is $ 35,845.

On Friday, world number one Novak Djokovic has this to say about the issue:

“Not many great things are spoken about him lately,” the world number one said. “I’m sorry to hear that, because I share the opinion of many players and many people in the tennis world that he’s one of the greatest talents the game has seen lately.”
