The 2012 WTA Championships Istanbul begins today and the world’s top eight singles players plus two alternates and four top doubles teams are in the Turkish capital to compete for lucrative cash prizes and important ranking points that will solidify their place in the 2013 season. The heavy favorite to win this title for the third time is world number three Serena Williams.
Williams has played 57 matches this year and has won 53 (93%). The former top-ranked player has truly dominated the WTA Tour by winning six titles, including three major hauls – the 2012 Wimbledon, US Open and the London Olympics Singles Gold Medal. The only reason why she’s not clinched the top ranking was due to her sparse schedule.
Though she might not end the season at world number one, Williams will certainly bring her A-Game at this event.
