The Del Potro vs Tomic 2014 Sydney International Final match takes place on Saturday, January 11.

World number five Juan Martin Del Potro advanced to the final of the Sydney International 2014 tournament after the Argentine eliminated Dmitry Tursunov 6-4, 6-2. This is Del Potro’s 25th ATP-level final and he will have a chance to win his 18th career title as he faces defending champion Bernard Tomic of Australia in the final on Saturday.

“I think I played my best match of the week,” said del Potro. “I played great with my forehands and serves. I didn’t make easy errors and I played solid on the baseline. I think I did everything okay, and I’m glad with my level of today. I’m looking forward for the final of tomorrow.”

Tomic will have a chance to defend a title for the first time after surviving qualifier Sergiy Stakhovky’s challenge 6-7, 7-5, 6-3 in a match that lasted two hours and 14 minutes.

“The way played here, I’m very happy,” said Tomic. “Tomorrow is going to be a difficult match. I’ve got to prepare as best as I can. Last time I played he beat me pretty comfortably, 6-3, 6-3. I felt like I had chances in that match. I have to go for my shots and play the way I played in my first round and the quarters to win.”

Tomic secured his first career ATP title a year ago in this event after overcoming Kevin Anderson.

The winner of the 2014 Sydney International title will receive $82,040 plus 250 ranking points. The runner-up gets $43,210 and 150 points.
