Tomas Berdych dispatches Isner to secure French Open quarterfinal berth

Sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic advanced the quarterfinals of the French Open 2014 tournament after dispatching John Isner of United States 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday. This is his fifth win out of seven past meetings with the tall American.

“There were quick breaks in each of the sets,” said Berdych. “That’s something that really helped through all the match, especially against a guy like John. He likes to stay as close as possible, serving well. I think it’s a good thing to avoid playing tie-breaks with him. So that was one of my plans in the beginning, and I’m really glad that it was working pretty good.”

Isner gave an assessment on how the match went.

“I was a little slow out there, but I thought [Berdych] just played well,” said Isner. “Thought he played very well. He was a lot better than me today, and that’s really all it was to that match out there. He was just the better player.”

Up next for Berdych is Ernests Gulbis of Latvia who advanced to his second French Open quarterfinal after eliminating Roger Federer.
