Fish pulls out of US Open, hands Federer a quarterfinal berth

World number one Roger Federer did not sweat out in his fourth round match after his opponent Mardy Fish of United States pulled out of the tournament as a precautionary measure. This means Federer continues his impressive streak of reaching 34 consecutive quarterfinals (or better) at Grand Slam tournaments.

Fish, seeded 23rd at Flushing Meadows, missed almost three months of the 2012 season due to a medical procedure to correct an accelerated heartbeat. His agent said that Fish is fine and is now resting as a precautionary measure and is expected to participate in a number of tennis tournaments in Asia in the next few weeks.

“I am really sorry for Mardy. I just want to wish him a speedy recovery,” Federer said in a statement issued by US Open organizers.

“We all want to see him back on tour soon,” he added.
