After turning down Federer, Cahill joins Adidas coaching team

adidasAccomplished coach Darren Cahill certainly has more than one opportunity knocking on his doors these days. After deciding not to coach Roger Federer full time because he’s prioritizing his family, Cahill’s got an offer he could not resist.

Cahill has joined Las Vegas-based training partner Gil Reyes as member of the Adidas coaching team or Player Development Program.

In an interview with The New York Times, Cahill said that it was difficult turning down Federer’s offer – which was definitely a lucrative one but requires him to travel back and forth to Dubai because the Swiss player considers the city as his training base.

“Roger is an absolutely class act. I told him on Sunday, and it was a difficult decision, but I just couldn’t do it. It’s getting tougher and tougher for me [to] pack the bags and leave the kids at this stage,” Cahill was quoted as saying.

As part of the training team, Cahill and Reyes will be assisting in coaching Adidas-endorsed tennis players such as Sania Mirza who they are training in this week’s BNP Paribas Open.

“I am eager to get fully involved in the adidas Player Development Program team and excited to renew my working relationship with Gil Reyes at home in Las Vegas,” Cahill said in a statement.
